Kira Brawley of East Stroudsburg, born prematurely, now thrives
Beverly Brawley of East Stroudsburg, Pa., knew her baby would be born prematurely, so she planned the birth at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network where there was a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Then complications forced doctors at Pocono Medical Center to do an emergency Cesarean section, and Kira Brawley was born 11 weeks premature and 50 miles from the lifesaving NICU care she needed.
But help was already on its way. Doctors had alerted Lehigh Valley Hospital, which dispatched a MedEvac helicopter carrying a NICU team to pick up the 2-pound, 9-ounce baby. “The flight team and NICU team were both incredible, stabilizing Kira and giving great support to my husband, Brian,” Brawley says.
For seven weeks Kira was cared for by a NICU team led by neonatologist Lorraine Dickey, M.D. Kira was on a ventilator for two days and treated successfully for a variety of complications.
